New action week

I never knew how sweet not working and just being in the studio could be. It is. Exploration instead of late night pressured exploration. YES. On Wednesday night I went to Brad Eberhard's first installment of his apocalypse film club at Sea & Space exploration gallery which will happen next Wed. and the Wed. after. We watched Time of the Wolf by Frenchie Michael Haneke which was powerful and beautiful and haunting. Then Brad lightened it up with Panic in the Year Zero which starred Frankie Avalon and had some classic street toughs as the antagonists. I highly suggest seeing both of the films. Also look up the gallery site as it is a CalArts alumni co-op space which does cool things. Good stuff and a great idea for an evening. I also took Bird out surfing for the first time which she was sort of into but mostly wanted to collect shells.
In a world of far too much self reflective life documentation I struggle with whether or not to document this season of unemployed art magic, but I think I will. Less for you guys and maybe for my own recording good.

Words of intrigue, maybe wisdom

One person can make work for 25 years, and in the middle, something happens, and there's no relationship between the early and the late work....We always want to think a human being has this connection, but the truth is the human being has no connection....I'd really like to see the end of time or have an experience outside of time....I'm not leading, I'm following. I'm following something that is happening......Richard Tuttle
I like that a lot. Especially in terms of making objects that for some silly reason I feel compelled to make. The God factor is my only sticky spot with ol' Dick. I feel led and connected, but I would be delusional to think I knew much more than that. Except I know I love peanut m&m's and ocean smell.

Help from Pablo and Andy

So I had a dream last night that I was in a remote area as a result of driving really fast to get a way from a psycho killer that I owed money to type of a situation. It was going to be bad. I ended up in a house/cabin with me, my wife, my brother, my daughter, and who else should be there with us? Pablo freakin' Picasso, complete with that diaper type loin cloth he wore in the south of France in his later years. He was camping and we intruded to hide out. So we knew the killer was coming so I began to gather fire wood and weapons since I knew we had to post up over night. Pablo was slow going in his efforts but he did help out and that was cool. He wasn't much of a talker but approved of my actions.
Symbolic?
I ask because I was recently helped by another 20th century monster of rock. I am able to quit my job and paint for the summer because I made a nice commision selling a really, really expensive silver Marilyn print by Andy Warhol at the gallery where I work (as a preparitor which makes my sale even more cosmic). So I feel like the ghosts of paintings past are encouraging me in my quest for knowledge, wisdom, and the making of kick ass paintings. I'm feeling encouraged. Andy gave me some money and Pablo protected me from psycho's whom I might owe money to in my commitment to unemployed painterdom. Thanks guys.

Danny's amazing Wake Surfing

So yet again I poach from Eric but this is in honor of two things. One he talked me into surfing on the 4th of July with him and the above video'd Danny and thanks guys it was rad. And also in honor of me having to miss brother Eric's bachelor party where they adventured Eric into soon to be married-hood and where this piece of magic was filmed by Vern or Eric. Congratulations Eric and Heather.

New Action

The LA Times book review blog Jacket Copy, reviewed the Cover Version group show that I'm in at Taylor de Cordoba this month. It's a book cover show that is pretty sweet. I did a new Bible cover that was pictured on my blog two posts ago. Good show to check out through July.
Also Tuesday is my last day working for Chip Tom. He is a great boss and good curator but dudes I gots to paint. I am re-reading Agnes Martin's writings and getting in deep with the good Lord and getting stoked on the adventure and getting less stoked on the comforts. So unemployment and more art and surfing and family and God will be the replacement for driving and hanging and wrapping others' art.
